Mu Nanyin is one of the most outstanding female generals of the Yunnan Mu family. She is sworn siblings with Chen Beishao, the ruler of the Kingdom of Chenlu. But when Chen Beishao goes off to war, he is ambushed by villains. Beset by trouble both within and without, he is ultimately defeated and killed. His wife dies soon after, leaving behind their young son, Chen Muchi. Mu Nanyin knows that her sworn brother gave the boy this name because he meant to entrust him to her care. After handing the Yunnan Mu family over to her younger brother, Mu Nanyin rushes to the capital of Chenlu and resolutely takes on the burden of regency. The villains, however, are not done with her. They ambush her, and although she miraculously survives, she is left paralyzed.
But Mu Nanyin does not give up. She knows that the two-year-old Chen Muchi still needs her. With her own prestige and the strength of the Yunnan Mu family behind her, she and Chen Muchi eventually secure their positions. At last, amid the relentless physical and mental exhaustion, Chen Muchi comes of age, and she can finally hand the Kingdom of Chenlu over to him. She is only thirty-five, yet her health is as poor as that of a sixty-year-old woman. Still, having trained in martial arts for years, she continues to look young and beautiful. As the two spend time together, Chen Muchi begins to develop feelings for Mu Nanyin that go beyond family affection.
