The beloved eldest princess died overnight. The emperor flew into a rage and ordered an investigation, which revealed that the princess's husband had poisoned her to protect his mistress. The emperor was furious and had him beheaded at once to avenge his daughter. Deeply shaken, he also decided to abdicate in favor of a worthy successor. The crown prince ascended the throne and, to commemorate his own sister, changed the dynasty's name to Xuan. That same year, the imperial examinations were opened to scholars from humble families. The people later called these events the Yongjia Case.
