Mutual Loathing Is Middle Age

He still remembered how He Changfeng had looked at him back then, with tender eyes full of affection, warmth, and doting love.

Xu Zhi couldn't help thinking of this when she saw He Changfeng attending the Lantern Festival with a pretty young woman.

Her maid saw them and, furious, was about to go up and scold the shameless couple. But Xu Zhi caught her by the arm and said softly, "Let it go."

A lifelong union between one man and one woman was just a story in a romance novel. In reality, plenty of couples who married young reached middle age only to find themselves sick of each other.

"Madam!" Her maid spoke up for her, but Xu Zhi merely said, "Let's go back."

She had occupied the position of Madam He for so long that she'd long forgotten she, too, had once been bright and full of joy.

Over the years, she'd spent too long pretending to be the perfect Madam He, so people wouldn't gossip or mock her for being a country girl, or mock He Changfeng for marrying a woman from a humble family. She'd gone from a lively girl who climbed onto the roof to cause trouble to a poised, proper, virtuous woman. Somewhere along the way, she'd lost the happiest, most joyful version of herself from childhood.

Everyone thought a country girl like Xu Zhi, who had finally married into the Grand Tutor's residence, would never willingly let go. Even if her husband fell for someone else, she was still the rightful Madam He, and nobody could take her place. He Changfeng thought so, too.

But that night, a clearly written divorce agreement was laid on He Changfeng's desk.

Xu Zhi thought He Changfeng had long since grown sick of her, too. Now that he had a new love, a divorce should be easy enough.

But that night, the man who was usually so calm stormed into the Xu family home, his face blazing with anger.
