Starting at the Wet Market

Du Lang is a four-year-old girl who lives with her mother near a market. During the day, her mother sells pork, and Du Lang plays with their landlady. Her mother has raised her to be sturdy and cheerful... though they're a little poor. One day, Du Lang crawled into a wardrobe. Deep inside, she found a long passageway. She crawled and crawled until she reached a big, beautiful garden. A little boy in a suit was startled. They stared at each other... That day, Du Lang got to eat the ice cream she'd been longing for. And the little boy, Chu Mu, saw his cousin, who was always picking on him, get beaten until he cried and howled for the first time. They promised to keep it a secret. But little kids aren't very good at keeping secrets. One rainy night, a melancholy rich woman followed Chu Mu and crawled through the little passageway into the garden. And so she stepped out of her cold, ostentatious world of wealth and into the noisy, bustling market... A heartwarming story about two children, two mothers, and an old woman. Reader note: The two mothers' storylines take up quite a lot of the book. Coming soon: Don't You Dare Bully My Little Sister! A family of idiots has a genius child.
