They say the Big Bad Wolf ate Little Red Riding Hood at dusk, witches ride their brooms through the night, mermaids always sing in the sunshine, and the dragon has long since fallen to a knight’s sword...
Yurika doesn’t care about the long hair occasionally let down from the distant tower. After all, she’s just a country girl. She loves her home, and that love leaves her certain she would never betray her little town. She will always wish that no carriages race along the country lanes, that the woods behind her house remain unchanged year after year, and that the pasture grass stays lush and green.
But she still ran away. On the very day she was supposed to begin her internship, Yurika quietly chose another direction.
“I’m just sick. I’ve lost my mind. I’ll come back.”
“Where else could I possibly go?”
During those three months, she joined forces with a red-capped hunter to kill three wolves, taught a mute woman with a bad leg to write, witnessed a princess sacrificed to a dragon become queen, searched for traces of dragons with an unrecognized scholar of the dragon tongue, rode a broom over a chasm with a free-spirited witch, followed a stubborn Thumbelina in search of the land of little people, and took a prince’s place to awaken a princess sleeping in a bed of roses...
Years later, the girl who won everyone’s acclaim with a travelogue stood on the awards stage and said, “Yes, mermaids can’t sing at all. They communicate with gestures, not words. After all, anyone who opens their mouth underwater can only blow bubbles, can’t they?”
The story centers on the female lead. The male lead appears later.
