When I met Lingzi at Erma Bar, my first impression was that her big eyes held an unusual stubbornness.
Erma is one of the bars I visit most often. Farther in is Chengdu's bar street, Lan Kwai Fong, a famous nightlife district. Anshun Bridge connects it to the bars across the river on Jiuyan Bridge, all of them crowded together in a boozy blur. Every day, countless couples end up together after a night of passion in a hotel bed.
The bar sits by the river. Stepping inside feels like entering a unique space where Chinese aesthetics and modern style blend together. A weathered wooden plaque hangs above the entrance, with the four characters for "Erma Tavern" carved into it in calligraphy. Colorful LED tubes on the walls give off a strong Chengdu vibe: "If I'm not drunk, Brother Ma can't sleep."
