This chapter gives equal weight to the Cangyun-Tian Ce and Mingjiao-Tian Ce couples. The war plot and the romance plot unfold side by side.
Xiao Jingxuan and Di Yixi, Tian Ce senior and junior brothers, learn about the complicated experiences each went through after their falling-out, and are filled with emotion.
After reconnecting through their work together, they gradually let go of their grievances and hope their interrupted friendship can have a new beginning.
But He Qingyao, a foreign merchant, knows that this development poses a serious threat to the agreement he and Xiao Jingxuan once made.
As an outsider, he would rather leave the turmoil of war behind with Xiao Jingxuan and live safely in a foreign land than devote himself entirely to a battlefield where he could die at any moment.
For them, everything they went through in the Black Gobi has instead torn apart what was once a fairly stable relationship, and it may ultimately destroy it through betrayal born of disappointment.
Still young and inexperienced, Shen Yanbin shifts between the perspectives of an observer and a participant. He faces the storms alongside Di Yixi, learning, understanding, helping, and growing.
Theme: Everyone trapped in hardship can find a glimmer of hope, a new beginning, and someone who shares their ideals.
