The Demon Venerable Ming Yuan spent his entire life working himself to the bone. After failing his tribulation, he was killed by a baffling beam of golden light.
The good news: she's been reborn and can keep working herself to the bone.
The bad news: she was reborn in an immortal sect, on enemy territory.
As the saying goes, know yourself and your enemy and you can win every battle. Ming Yuan figures that since she's already here, she might as well start cultivating from scratch and learn a few immortal sect techniques while she's at it.
But the people in the immortal sects don't seem nearly as reliable as she imagined
The Artifact Refining Sect changed its name and opened a general store in the mortal realm. They've made their technology accessible to the masses and started selling all sorts of bizarre little magical devices: household demon-revealing mirrors, self-cleaning brooms, image-recording stones, and laundry talismans that clean with a single application...
The Xuantian Sect sells all kinds of spiritual talismans that ward off evil and ghosts with excellent results. The disciples of the Qianji Pavilion put their specialist skills to work as information brokers, and occasionally set up fortune-telling stalls by the roadside to swindle people out of their spirit stones.
The disciples of the Beast Taming Sect spend every day with their faces covered, reselling small animals at the flower-and-bird market.
Only the Hehuan Sect makes no effort to hide what they do, even keeping their original name. As Ming Yuan walks by, they wave their handkerchiefs at her: "Young hero, come have some fun!"
Weren't immortal sects supposed to be aloof and upright? So much for being pure-hearted and cutting off worldly ties.
Is there even one place left where people seriously study magic?!
"There is, there is," her master assures her, then pulls out the cultivation manual he's treasured all his life for his little disciple to study.
Ming Yuan reads the beginning. This is interesting.
She reads a couple more lines. Now she's hooked.
She turns the page, only to find... that's... that's it?!
Her master explains sheepishly, "The immortal sects sell their techniques for a fortune. I've saved up spirit stones for ages, but I could only afford this one page..."
Ming Yuan: "..."

To scrape together enough spirit stones to buy the immortal sects' extortionately priced cultivation manuals, the Demon Venerable swallows her pride and starts farming and taking odd jobs where she has to beat people up.
And so
Xuantian Sect: "Damn it, where did this crooked cultivator come from, mass-printing our warding talismans?!"
Beast Taming Sect: "Which bastard is playing that awful beast-taming flute?! Hey! Put my rabbit down!!!!"
Qianji Pavilion: "Firsthand information, ten thousand low-grade spirit stones. Fair price for young and old alike. No refunds if we cheat you."
Hehuan Sect: "Hehe, young hero, come have some fun!"

③ You can cultivate as a demon or become an immortal!
