Jian Xingsui is a level-ten introvert who has been single for twenty-two years. His biggest dream is to save enough money to buy a little house in the suburbs, shut himself in, and live out his life with a cat.
He wakes up in a showbiz wish-fulfillment novel, in the role of a doomed side character who "leaves the group due to mental health issues" after just three chapters: the gloomy, overlooked fifth member of the idol group E.O.S.
The original owner's scandals are endless: privately contacting fan-site admins, bullying the youngest member, slacking off onstage. The entire internet calls him a "cancer." There are only 180 days left until the group disbands, and the four chosen ones around him, the leader, the main dancer, the main vocalist, and the youngest member, look at him with icy contempt.
Jian Xingsui makes up his mind: keep his head down, stay under the radar, and leave the industry as soon as his contract ends.
On the first day, he dyes his highlights back to black and sits in the corner of the practice room playing keyboard, only wanting to write a demo for the new song.
Before he can finish, the cool and ascetic leader, Gu Qichi, walks in. His gaze lingers on Jian Xingsui's fingers for three seconds. "Who taught you that chord progression?"
On the second day, the hormone-fueled main dancer, Jiang Yan, turns his Bluetooth speaker up to full volume and beckons him over with a taunting grin. "What are you hiding for? Keep up with my break, and don't make me say it twice."
On the third day, the main vocalist, Shen Tinglan, hands him a cup of warm milk in the recording studio late at night, his voice so gentle it could melt. "Xingsui, sing the chorus one more time. I want to record it as backing vocals."
On the fourth day, the group's beloved youngest member, Lin Yuche, slips into his dorm room hugging a pillow, eyes red. "Big brother, there's thunder outside. I can't sleep. Will you hold me?"
From that day on, everything begins to spiral out of control.
Using "the group's image" as an excuse, Gu Qichi forcibly moves him into his own bedroom to "keep an eye on his schedule."
At a concert attended by tens of thousands, Jiang Yan traps him in his arms during a dance move and whispers through his earpiece, "Don't move. The cameras are on us."
Shen Tinglan hides a love song written for him on the new album. The crowd sings along at the first performance, and only Jian Xingsui knows it is really a confession.
Lin Yuche is even crazier. He openly calls Jian Xingsui "wife" during a livestream, then pins him to the sofa after the broadcast and bites his collarbone, eyes red. "Big brother, you can only be mine."
Jian Xingsui wants to run, but discovers that every attempt to struggle only tightens the web of protection, provocation, seduction, and dependence around him.
The stage lights go out. In the darkness, four pairs of hands seize him at once, and low voices overlap by his ear:
"Xingsui, stop thinking about disbanding."
"Your contract has 180 days left? Then we'll make it 180 nights, until you don't have the strength to talk about leaving the industry."
Later, the entire entertainment industry wonders why, on the eve of E.O.S's disbandment, the once universally hated "outsider" is being protected by four top-tier stars at the center of the group, with the cameras too afraid to even linger on him.
Only Jian Xingsui knows:
Offstage, he has long been their shared secret, one they have to keep hidden from the world.
