Looking for a Novel About National Destiny

I can't remember the protagonist's name, but there was a Russian competitor who I think was called Alexander. The book had no official couple, but readers shipped the protagonist with the Russian competitor, and even the author shipped them too. I think the author was a man. Has anyone read it? Please recommend it to me, thanks!
