Because of this book, I fell in love with Chinese medicine. The male protagonist, Chen Yuanzhou, is a nine-year undergraduate and Ph. D. Student at Guangfu University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and is a resident physician when he joins the job. This setting is very real - there are indeed traditional Chinese medicine schools cultivating this kind of "doctoral starting point" clinical talents, and it is not the routine of "meeting an old Chinese doctor in the mountains".
