Reader note

The novel attempts to combine elements of protagonist growth and group portrait novels, but fails in both. The fundamental contradiction lies in [type misalignment and gap in expectations] 1. The main problem is [failure to create the protagonist] ① No substantial growth: Shen La has almost no evolution in mentality, resourcefulness, and decisiveness from the beginning to the end, and is always in a passive, dazed and protected state ② Golden finger tasteless: Even if he obtains immortality, seeds, and magic weapons in the later stage, his combat consciousness and decision-making ability are still in the mortal stage. He has top-notch configuration but repeatedly makes mistakes, which cannot bring the feeling of becoming stronger. ③Awkward positioning: The function as camera and narrator overwhelms his character attributes of action and growth, making it difficult for readers to substitute and recognize. 2. [Villain shaping plane] The motivation is pale and reduced to a tool. ①Single motivation: The motivations of the villain (Xiao Sanda, Lin Feng) are simplified to pure greed and jealousy, lacking complex background, profound beliefs or tragedy. ②Functional motivation: The existence of the villain is mainly to cause trouble for the protagonist group to promote the plot, rather than as a confrontation with independent personality logic. This makes their conflict with the polling bureau lack emotional tension (human words: difficult to empathize) 3. [Pseudo group portrait] The characters rely on the perspective of the protagonist and lack independent souls ①Protagonist-centered filter: The shaping of almost all supporting characters is limited to what they see and hear. They only exist when interacting with the protagonist, and rarely have independent pasts, inner worlds and story lines ② Functionalization of supporting characters: Supporting characters such as Qiu Bulao and Hao Wenming are more like labels carrying specific functions (fighting, comedy, overturning) rather than living and autonomous people. Their character expression is superficial and lacks in-depth exploration. ③ It runs counter to true group portraits: This book is essentially a character illustration from a serious perspective, rather than a group portrait novel with multiple perspectives, multiple main lines, and supporting characters also have independent lives. To sum up, as a protagonist's coming-of-age novel, his growth, struggle process and qualitative change in abilities have always lacked nodes that resonate with me; as a group portrait novel, it cannot provide the character's life and depth outside of Shen La's sight, reducing the characters to plot tools. Compared with the [group portrait] that has been emphasized in the comment area, I personally think it is closer to [a fantasy unit drama that unfolds from the perspective of an ordinary mortal and focuses on suspense events] Its core appeal lies in the process of uncovering the secrets of each incident, the internal discord within the polling bureau, and the charm of individual high-profile supporting characters such as Fatty Sun and Invincible, rather than in-depth character creation, complex main plot games, or the counterattack growth of the protagonist. The inherent limitations of this work due to its protagonist's narrative choice will lead to a mismatch between the readers' expectations [in-depth characters, main line of growth, complex villains] and the content provided by the author [unit ghost stories, suspenseful atmosphere, functional characters]. This should be the source of the "uncomfortable" feeling in the comments.

Story summary: Have you ever experienced something like this? A certain boss on a certain street grills mutton skewers that are particularly delicious. The meat is chewy, golden and oily. You can't find a similar taste in any restaurant. But in fact, his skewers are grilled from humans and meat, and the chewy texture you like is just human myofilament protein. How many homeless people go missing in the city every month, that's how many 'sheep' he gets!
