Because of his limited strength, Liu Bei suffered repeated defeats in the melee between princes, and successively attached himself to Gongsun Zan, Tao Qian, Cao Cao, Yuan Shao, Liu Biao and other princes. However, because they always adhered to the code of conduct of persuading people with virtue, they were respected by celebrities from all over the world. Tao Qian, Liu Biao and others gave up letting their sons inherit the foundation, and instead chose to give up their territories of Xuzhou and Jingzhou to Liu Bei. Through unremitting efforts, Liu Bei successively captured Jingzhou and Yizhou after the Battle of Chibi and established the Shu Han regime.
