Three-and-a-half-year-old Su Nuonuo can always hear old things talking.

A rusty button told her that someone who had been gone for more than seventy years lay buried beneath a snowy mountain.

A burned whistle told her that before an uncle ran into a sea of flames, he had promised his daughter he'd come home for her birthday.

An old badge, its lettering worn away, told her that the man everyone had misunderstood had not been home in a very, very long time.

Su Nuonuo hugged her grandfather, a former soldier, and sobbed, her little shoulders shaking.

"Grandpa, they're all so cold."

"Can Nuonuo take them home?"

One phone call, and the volunteer group "Rivers and Mountains, Return to the Ranks" was formed to search for them.

From snowy mountains to deserts, from border towns to the deep sea, she followed the last faint traces of sound left by old objects, bringing the names buried by time back to their families, one by one.

Before long, many people had come to know the child in the little red hat, carrying an old military pack.

Every time she brought an uncle home, she would solemnly give him a not-quite-correct salute.

"Uncle, it's dawn."

"Nuonuo has come to take you home."
