A Family Heirloom From a Wealthy Clan, Picked Up by My Mom Years Ago

Three years ago, Mrs. Shen said in front of a room full of people, “Your mother was a fraud. This bracelet is fake.”

That year, a fire at Jianweitang turned twenty-seven years of accounts to ash. Half a year later, my mother was gone, and no one ever took back the word “fraud.”

Three years later, at the Shen family’s charity preview, that same bracelet is displayed under a plaque reading “Ancestral Heirloom of the Shen Family,” waiting to be sold. The appraiser they’ve invited is me.

From the age of fourteen, I copied the ledgers at Jianweitang for my mother. I did it for nine years. I remember every item the wealthy families in this city pawned when they ran short of money: the numbers, dates, people who handled them, and sale prices.

I take off my gloves.

“Received by Jianweitang on April 12, 1998. The seller’s surname was Shen. He was your husband’s cousin. Three thousand two hundred.”

No one in the room speaks. One woman turns her bidder’s paddle over and lays it face down on her lap.

But the ledgers have burned, and there’s no evidence to back up a single word I’ve said. I can only force them to admit the truth themselves.

My mother saved forty-seven items in all. They’re now stored in the Shen family’s vault, labeled “Old Shen Family Collection.” I’ll claim them back one by one, starting with a single person, then a whole street, then the rules of the entire city.

Mr. Shao, who oversees the ins and outs of every wealthy family in the city, never asks “why.” He only asks “where is it now?” He has the records, and I know each item’s history.

In a year and seven months, he has asked me only one question. It wasn’t “why.”
