Heaven and earth are a banquet that never ends.
Gifts earn goodwill, unpaid gifts go on the tab, and accepting a gift without returning one costs you a bit of fortune.
A young monk named Jiezui receives an invitation. It has eight seats, and the seat of honor is empty. No one knows who is hosting the banquet.
He shoulders his load and heads to the Guest-Welcoming Pavilion. From then on, he sits at the same Eight Immortals table with seven "odd characters": a red-clad swordsman who stores his blade in the ledger to earn interest; a "stickler for rules" who can't abide fake accounts and edits them with his brush; a girl beneath an umbrella who can learn the affairs of an entire city by listening to a single rainstorm; an armored veteran who can bear the hearts of an entire city; a schoolteacher who sets questions for heaven and earth with his ruler; a shadow official who gets by on conclusions borrowed in advance; and a cricket-playing gentleman who loves to say, "Let's play a round."
Their work is to enter unfinished dreams: a wedding where the couple has bowed to the family altar seven times, but the bride never arrives; a lonely city that waits thirty days for reinforcements, though there is no enemy outside its walls; an imperial examination where the honors list has been turned into outrageously expensive wedding gifts; a ferry that has spent three hundred years failing to ferry people across; a lantern market afraid of dawn...
Whatever a dream lacks, that is what its rules become. Only when they complete the ending does another dish appear at the banquet. They must gather eight bowls, eight plates, and sixteen courses before the feast can begin and the guests can leave.
But the further they go, the stranger things become: the handwriting on the invitation and the words "Don't lose it" in the dream come from the same hand.
