Notes from the Nine Gates: The Bronze Calamity

In the autumn of 1937, the Buddha Lord, leader of the Nine Gates, left behind a photograph, a bronze ring, and four words written in blood on the back of the photo: “Wait for me for sixty years.” Sixty years later, all the old friends of the Nine Gates have passed away. Only Zhang Qiling still remembers that promise. But he has forgotten who he is. Wu Xiaoman is Wu Xie’s grandson. At seven or eight years old, he has a natural ability to see the “threads of karma” wrapped around people. When he meets Zhang Qiling on the threshold of his family’s antique shop, he sees that the silent man is surrounded by nothing: no past, no point of origin, like a blank sheet wiped clean. The only thing in his hand is a burning-hot ring. Strange things begin happening in Changsha. The rumble of bronze turning echoes from an old well. Residents gradually forget the names of the old streets. Two of the Buddha Lord’s seven secret letters vanish from the Huo family archives. Qiu Wanqing approaches Zhang Qiling with fragments of ancient texts. She wears a gentle smile, but a dagger laced with memory poison is hidden in her sleeve. Beneath Lake Dongting, a colossal bronze gate slowly opens. It is no place of eternal life, but a deadly trap the Buddha Lord has spent sixty years preparing. With every step Zhang Qiling takes deeper inside, one fewer person in the world remembers him. If he reaches the end, the world will erase him completely. Wu Xiaoman grips the ring until it cuts his palm, then scratches three crooked characters into its inner surface with his fingernail. He cannot read or write. He only knows this: there must be someone in the world who remembers the man without a name. The sixty-year deadline is one day away. Inside and outside the gate, everyone is waiting for someone to remember him.
