At Fifty-Five, I Led My Dance Troupe to the National Finals

“Dance with your head held high.” “Even cold boiled water can be heated again.”

In her fifth year of retirement, Zhou Guilan’s dance troupe is about to disband. The sound system has been unplugged, her daughter-in-law has rented out their rehearsal space, and her whole family says, “You’re too old for all this. Stop making trouble.”

When she was fifteen, the provincial song and dance troupe wanted her, but one word from her father slammed that door shut. For the next forty years, she never performed a single complete dance. Now she digs her dance shoes out from the bottom of a closet and gathers the most youthful-at-heart grandmas in her neighborhood. Together, they dance from the public square to the city competition, then the provincial competition, and finally the national finals. People look down on her onstage, someone rigs the game behind the scenes, and the judges are bribed. There’s only one thing she knows how to do: dance with her head held high.

Her husband of thirty years has never said he loves her. The words he can’t bring himself to say are hidden in places no one else would notice. Their journey takes them south, with the sea as their destination. It’s where he promised to take her when they were young.

At fifty-five, she finally learns that even cold boiled water can be heated again.
