Everyone in Qingwu County knows that Yunwu Manor produces “noble grain.”

Every household there is too lazy to work the fields, yet their granaries overflow year after year. Even the county magistrate has to show them respect.

Next door, Broken Basket Gully is all barren hills and cracked fields. Its wells have run dry and its grain stores are empty. The villagers work themselves to the bone, but their children are still starving.

No one knows that the good fortune stolen by Yunwu Manor comes from a little girl.

Xiaomanya is the manor owner's own daughter, yet she has been treated like a bringer of disaster since childhood. She eats ash scraped from the cooking pot, sleeps in a corner of the woodshed, does the most work, and suffers the harshest scolding.

When Yunwu Manor's noble grain runs into trouble, they stuff Xiaomanya into a grain-sacrifice urn, hoping to trade her life for the manor's continued prosperity.

By sheer luck, she is rescued by the poorest family in Broken Basket Gully, the Gu family.

The Gu family is so poor they can barely scrape together a meal. Her father has a bad leg and her mother is ill, but they still break their last half-piece of mixed-grain flatbread in two to share with her, and give her the only bed that keeps out the wind.

For the first time, Xiaomanya learns that someone might save the best things for her.

And from that very day onward

The Gu family's well, dry for three years, suddenly fills with water.

Tender shoots quietly emerge from the wasteland in Broken Basket Gully, the very land everyone had given up on.

Meanwhile, Yunwu Manor's granaries begin running into trouble, night after night…

Only then do people realize that Yunwu Manor was never home to the true bringer of good fortune.
