After Breaking Off Her Engagement in the Seventies, the Rugged Military Officer Went Wild

(Alternate 1970s setting + broken engagement + farming + face-slapping + strong female lead + military marriage + feel-good story + sweet romance)

Lu Wantang, the daughter of a high-ranking Shanghai family, has spent five years sent down to the countryside. Just as she finally receives notice that her name has been cleared, her fiancé Huo Mingyuan slaps a letter breaking off their engagement in her face. Her return-to-the-city slot is stolen, and she is assigned to clean toilets.

The whole village is waiting to laugh at her?

In front of everyone, she burns her dowry, then points to Zhao Wenxiao, the rough man with the worst prospects in the village. “I’ll marry you. We’re consummating the marriage tonight.”

Everyone says she’s crazy.

Until the next day, when four military trucks pull up at the village entrance, their beds piled high with whole sides of pork, military rations, and white flour. The garrison commander's guard stands at attention and salutes. “Hello, sister-in-law! These are the commander's gifts to welcome you!”

Huo Mingyuan's legs give way. “This good-for-nothing... who is she, really?”

Lu Wantang just smiles and gets to work slaughtering pigs, curing meat, and running a black market, turning the whole village upside down.

She says, “A Shanghai heiress doesn't clean toilets. A Shanghai heiress slaughters pigs for the New Year.”
