After three years of severe drought, Qingshi Village has run out of food and water. Three-and-a-half-year-old Jiang Zaozao is treated like a burden by her wicked grandmother and thrown into Wolfcry Ridge in the middle of the night.

To everyone's surprise, the little girl doesn't cry or fuss. Hugging a battered bamboo basket, she blinks and says:

“There's a sweet root under this tree.”

“There's a spring behind that rock.”

“Don't be scared, Mama. There's food in the mountains.”

From then on, the village's refugee party goes off script.

Other refugees flee by chewing bark, fighting over wild greens, and selling their children.

The Jiang family digs up kudzu roots, gathers mushrooms, stews pheasant soup, dries fruit, and makes fragrant cakes, setting up stalls and stockpiling food all along the way.

A crooked clan elder tries to steal their food?

Zaozao says in her little-girl voice, “There's three sacks of rice hidden in his cellar!”

A greedy official tries to detain them?

Zaozao raises her hand. “He's got a fake seal in his sleeve!”

Bandits try to rob them?

Zaozao tilts her head. “There's honeysuckle on the mountain behind your stronghold. You can sell it to buy medicine.”

Later, refugees follow little Fubao over mountains and across valleys, searching for water, food, and a way to survive, until they put down roots on a desolate slope nobody else wanted.

The Jiang family opens a mountain-goods shop, builds a spice workshop, starts a mountain school, and takes in the lonely and destitute, helping the whole village enjoy hot meals.

When important people from the capital come looking for her, everyone finally learns that the little girl who was thrown away is actually a “mountain delicacy blessing” who can save the people from famine.
