Jiang Manman is three and a half. Her father is lame, her mother is ill, and her three older brothers are so hungry their eyes glow. The family has only half a sack of bran left.

Her aunt steals their grain, her grandmother favors the other branch of the family, and everyone in the village says the Jiang family's second branch is doomed.

But who would have guessed that the little girl would strap on her tiny bamboo basket, head into the mountains, and find a small, fragrant mountain-god space?

Other people forage in the mountains and rely on luck. Manman just points with her little hand:

“There's a fat mushroom over there!”

“Crabs are hiding under that rock!”

“There's honey in that tree hollow!”

“Oh! This little wild boar ran right into the cooking pot!”

From then on, the Jiang family's kitchen smells delicious every day. There's mushroom soup, grilled fish, braised meat, hawthorn cake, chicken with pickled bamboo shoots, spicy rabbit, lotus-leaf rice, and one mouthwatering dish after another.

Her biased grandmother regrets it, her uncle's family turns green with envy, unscrupulous merchants try to steal her recipes, the county magistrate's wife comes begging, and even her amnesiac, lame father can no longer hide who he really is.

Hugging her little bowl, Jiang Manman says earnestly:

“Manman doesn't want to be a noble lady. Manman wants to help the whole village eat meat!”

Later, the barren mountains turn into golden hills, the poor village becomes wealthy, and the little darling everyone in her family once protected becomes a lucky star that everyone in Great Chu wants to take home.
