Do You Know? The Begonias Should Still Be in Bloom

In the third year of the Jingyou era of the Northern Song, behind the splendor of an official residence in Yangzhou, shadows gather. Schemes between social ranks and the treachery of human hearts never cease. Seven-year-old Minglan is a concubine-born daughter. Since childhood, she has lived with her gentle, long-suffering mother in the bleak, dilapidated Tinglan Courtyard. The servants routinely cheat and bully them, while a concubine plots against them in secret. Amid cold stares and constant hardship, she struggles to survive one day at a time.

Clever and perceptive, she conceals her strengths and keeps a low profile. In public, she is docile and well-behaved, while privately she sees through every rule and danger of the inner residence. Her dazzling reversal at a pitch-pot banquet brings her into the spotlight, but also invites trouble, turning the already beleaguered Tinglan Courtyard into a target for all. The back courtyard is rife with withheld allowances and false accusations, servants frame one another, and disputes between legitimate and concubine-born children rage on. Then a sudden incident on the river stirs up fresh turmoil: a nobleman is attacked and vanishes, and the whole city is thrown into chaos, dragging the Sheng household into a raging maelstrom.

Her mother lies dying after a difficult labor, with no help in sight. A loyal servant is falsely accused and wronged, while the entire household looks on with callous indifference. At this desperate moment, Gu Tingye, the legitimate son of the marquis's household, returns from the brink of death and breaks through the cold to carve out a glimmer of hope for the suffering mother and daughter. Having faced death and seen the good and evil in people's hearts, the naive little girl sheds her innocence and sees the truth of how to survive in a great household. From then on, she puts aside her weakness and plots carefully, turning the tide by relying on others and biding her time. Amid tangled power struggles and hidden storms in the mansions of the great families, she protects her loved ones, resists villains, and establishes herself, step by step breaking free of her lowly fate as she waits for the day she can turn the tables against all odds.
