Huo Qubing, General of the Agile Cavalry

During the Yuanshuo era of the Western Han dynasty, a boy named Huo Qubing lived in Chang'an. He was the nephew of Empress Wei Zifu and the great general Wei Qing, yet his illegitimate birth left him trampled underfoot by the aristocratic clans from childhood. At banquets, people mocked him. At the martial arts arena, he was disqualified. Even when he tried to meet his father, he was beaten out the door with a broom. He swallowed every humiliation in silence, day after day tempering his swordsmanship with blood and tears. Then came the day he led eight hundred light cavalry deep behind enemy lines, took more than two thousand heads, captured the Chanyu's uncle, and brought every one of his men home alive. The title "Marquis Champion" spread through Chang'an overnight. After that, he poured wine into a spring and shared it with thousands, giving the place the name "Jiuquan". At nineteen, he accepted the surrender of Hunye King, with forty thousand Xiongnu kneeling before his horse. At twenty-two, he performed the Fenglangjuxu sacrifice, planting the Han dynasty's sacrificial banner atop the Xiongnu's sacred mountain for the first time. At court, his political enemies Zhang Tang and Jiang Chong took turns setting traps for him, only for him to turn the tables and humiliate them every time. On the grasslands, he met Yu Qingge, a Xiongnu hostage princess, and they grew close. Amid the flash of blades and the moonlight, they protected a bond as fragile as it was moving. Yet the cold illness he had contracted in the northern desert had already taken root. In the autumn of Yuanshou's sixth year, General of the Agile Cavalry Huo Qubing died at the age of twenty-three. The history books left behind only a single character, but it could never contain the life he had burned through. He traded twenty-three years for four centuries of peace on the Han Empire's northern frontier. It wasn't victory that gave his life meaning. Even with only a brief life, he lived loudly, in a way no one would ever forget.
