Two Nine-Tailed Foxes Cross the Mortal World

In Qingyuan, an ancient city in the north, there is a shop with a weathered signboard: the Hall of Ten Thousand Signs. Two masters hold court inside: Master Bai, dressed all in white, with a face cold as frost. With three copper coins, he can divine yin and yang, foretell fortune and misfortune, and solve cold cases. He is a nine-tailed white fox who fell into the mortal world, once a guardian deity of the Celestial Realm. He rarely speaks more than three sentences, and every one cuts to the heart. His greatest headache is the red fox who chases after him all day, crying, “I’m hungry, I’m hungry!” Master Hong, dressed in fiery red, is lively and greedy, her fox eyes taking in every facet of the world. She can spot lies, read minds, and sniff out the bloodstain of a triple homicide. She is a nine-tailed red fox wanted by the Demon Realm, once an inspector. She seems carefree on the surface, but misses nothing. Her greatest headache is the white fox who keeps a stern face and pretends to be proper, yet sneaks over to tuck her in after she falls asleep. Two fox immortals burdened with secrets are forced to become partners by a wager made a thousand years ago. They open a case-solving hall in Qingyuan, helping the people with all manner of bizarre and difficult problems: memories missing for thirty years, an ancient well that weeps, a domino master who kills with prophecies, a sorcerer who prolongs his life by stealing children’s vital energy... One strange case after another, all beyond the government’s ability to solve, comes knocking at the Hall of Ten Thousand Signs. Bai Shuang casts divinations and pieces together the clues, lifting layer after layer of mystery. Dan Zhu reads minds and spots lies, cutting straight to the heart of the matter with a laugh. Yet neither of them expected that, as they solved cases, the thousand-year wager over “who would fall in love first” would quietly find its answer amid shared meals and everyday exchanges. They ask about every matter under heaven, and watch over this one city. In the end, this bickering pair found their way into each other’s hearts.
