Flying Against the Light: A Factory Girl’s Springtime in Shenzhen

Set in Shenzhen from 2017 to 2025, this story follows Tang Yiyi, a young woman from Yongzhou, Hunan, nicknamed Zhenzhen. After dropping out of middle school, she works in an electronics factory, endures hardship, and educates herself until she earns a master's degree at Shenzhen University. Along the way, she meets and falls in love with Jiang Xuebao, a writer and jewelry merchant, and together they establish a vocational training school. Through two intertwined journeys, Yiyi's struggle at the bottom and her path of self-education, and Xuebao's reflections on his privileged background and his search for meaning, the novel portrays a new generation of workers longing for knowledge amid the pressures of survival, and shows how education can change one person's fate and light the way for others. Moving through factory assembly lines, night-school classrooms, self-study exam halls, university campuses, and entrepreneurial workplaces, the story blends the resilience of people from Hunan, the opportunities and challenges of Shenzhen, and observations on the education and training industry. It ultimately returns to the founding purpose of a business: “to use your own light to ignite the light in others.” This is an ode to all the ordinary heroes who quietly strive in the city.

The heroine is one of many strivers in the cities of southern China. They come from different backgrounds but share a desire to grow and rise. In the fertile soil of Shenzhen, each gives their own personal expression to the Chinese Dream. Every character is a piece of the puzzle, together revealing the hope and warmth of our times.

May this firefly, kindled on an assembly line, light the way for more hands feeling their way through the dark.

The latest work by Principal Jiang of Yongzhou. This story is entirely fictional, and any resemblance to actual events is purely coincidental.
