Exiled to the Borderlands from the Start, with Emperor Wu of Han as My Father

Alternate history + “a loving father and filial son” + hilarious stress relief + a rule-breaking protagonist

The thing Emperor Wu of Han regretted most was not sewing this rebellious son’s mouth shut.

Reborn as Liu Ju, the Crown Prince of Liyi, he finds there’s no witchcraft scandal from the start, just a pair of hapless father and son trading insults. At court, he submits a report, and Emperor Wu smashes his bamboo slips on the spot. “Since when did my crown prince become such a coward?” Liu Ju replies impassively, “I’m not against war. I’m against reckless wars of expansion.”

Overnight, the crown prince is “exiled” to a frontier commandery.

He reclaims farmland, trains troops, and develops border trade. On a snowy night, he even saves a young general who’s barely clinging to life. When the young man wakes, his first words are, “From now on, anyone in Chang’an who dares touch you will have to answer to the long spear in my hands.”

Later

His old comrades, who had built everything from scratch with him, die on the desolate frontier. That is the first blow.

The loved ones who raised him risk their lives in a desperate struggle. That is the second.

His closest confidant, who shared everything with him, quietly dies to protect his family and country. That is the third.

Three blows temper him like steel, polishing the sharpness of his words into quiet patience and courage.

In Weiyang Palace, Emperor Wu reads the battle reports and watches that willful prince slowly grow into a steady heir. His mouth curls into a delighted grin, though his eyes conceal his heartache.

The ministers: Your Majesty, you’re acting tough again while secretly caring.

A formidable father and son who can’t stand each other yet worry deeply for one another. Three unforgettable partings.

In the end, their trials forge an emperor for the ages, one who shoulders the fate of a vast realm, and even manages to spur the Han Dynasty into a golden age far beyond its time.
