Synopsis

Xiao Yanyan, a noblewoman of the Liao, and Han Derang, the son of a Han official, fell in love as children and pledged to grow old together. But an imperial edict selecting consorts tore them apart. She was sent to the palace and became Empress to Emperor Jingzong of Liao. Five years later, the emperor died, leaving her with their young crown prince. The imperial clansmen coveted power, and powerful ministers watched like hawks. The widowed empress and her son were in mortal danger. At the most perilous moment, Han Derang, now the Southern Chancellery Commissioner, stepped forward. He put aside their old love and grievances, using an iron fist to stabilize the court. In turn, she silenced her critics and appointed him Grand Chancellor, entrusting half the realm to his care. Late one night in her bedchamber, she took his hand and said, “I wronged you back then. Now, you’re the only one I trust with this realm.” From then on, she rode out to lead her armies, while he planned from behind the scenes. Together, they drove back the Song forces, signed the Chanyuan Treaty, and spent twenty years bringing the Liao to its height. He was the only official who could address her by name, and she was the only empress dowager who dared break the ancestral rule that barred Han people from becoming princes, all for his sake. But rumors spread through the court, and the Khitan nobles came to regard him as a thorn in their side. Between empire and love, they would have to forge a path no one had ever dared to take. “If we cannot be together as husband and wife, then let us stand side by side at the pinnacle of the world as emperor and minister.” This is more than a love story. It is a legend that transcends ethnicity, ritual, and even life and death.

Looking for an Elegant Historical Chinese Romance Without Outlandish, Over-the-Top, or Brain-Dead Tropes

I want something with elegant, delicate writing. Not the kind that opens with someone getting disfigured or having their heart cut out. That's too melodramatic and clumsy. And no side characters like concubine-born daughters or female antagonists publicly attacking the heroine at banquets. People like that wouldn't survive three hours in ancient times unless they were faking their deaths. It's so unrealistic.
