The Nightingale of 1937

Shanghai, 1940.

Gu Manjun, a red-dressed dancer at the Paramount, has two secrets: first, she is an underground agent for the Chinese Communist Party, codenamed “Nightingale”; second, she is not the real Gu Manjun.

Ten years ago, the real Gu Manjun was murdered in France, and the organization arranged for her to assume that identity and go undercover. The secret should have stayed buried forever, until she receives an order to assassinate Tang Xiaocheng, deputy director of the Wang Jingwei regime's secret service headquarters.

On the night the assassination attempt fails, Tang Xiaocheng says to her, “You're not afraid of dying. You're assessing me, like a hunter sizing up its prey.”

He sees through her. But he doesn't expose her.

Soon, Gu Manjun discovers that Tang Xiaocheng has a photograph from ten years ago hidden away. The person in it is her, or rather, the real Gu Manjun. And the way he treats her is not like a captor dealing with his prey, but more like... someone who has been waiting ten years to see an old acquaintance.

When a traitor appears within the organization and the identity of “Nightingale” is exposed, Tang Xiaocheng covers for her in his own way. Who is he, really? What happened in France ten years ago? And has the organization she has always served been hiding a secret from her, too?

Beneath the deepest disguise lies the most dangerous truth.
