The Fading Echo of a Lament

They said the apocalypse never came.

No mushroom clouds, no towering tsunamis, no zombies roaming the streets. The world ended gently, one Wednesday afternoon.

That day, a pale pink cloud drifted across the sky, beautiful as cherry blossoms blooming backward toward the heavens. People stopped to take pictures and post them on social media. The mist descended, fine as dust and light as a sigh. People breathed it in, and then they smiled.

Zhang Shan was the last unrecorded “cognitive hard knot” in this city of thirty million people.

He was a mountain. His father had given him the name. When his son was born, the old-fashioned geologist looked at the outline of the distant mountains beyond the window and said, “Let’s call him Shan. The mountain is there. That’s enough.”

What his father left unsaid was: A mountain never moves toward anyone, so it will always be itself. His name was Zhang Shan.
