A Collection of Ghost Stories from Hubei Province

Collected Ghost Stories from Hubei Province Centered on the witchcraft and ghost lore of ancient Jingchu, this book builds a homegrown world of terror around the region’s distinctive landscapes: the Yangtze and Yunmeng Marsh, the deep forests of Shennongjia, ancient Han River bridges, old towns in Jingzhou, and the shadowed cliffs of Wudang. The book is divided into nine parts, each with twenty-five chapters of 2,500 words. The main storyline revolves around late-night paranormal livestreams, with a tightly paced plot and a chilling atmosphere. It offers an immersive regional horror experience, best read at night. The fainthearted should beware. Lin Yan, a Wuhan-based paranormal streamer, joins forces with folk-culture researcher Su Wan and adventure blogger Chen Yang to form a three-person team. At midnight, they go live to recount Hubei’s folk taboos and eerie happenings. But as soon as they start telling their stories, the vengeful spirits of the places they describe turn their attention toward them. Strange noises in the middle of the night at a haunted Republican-era mansion, bells ringing beneath the waters of a ghostly Yangtze shore, a little ghost delivering food in an abandoned Shennongjia village, and a wronged woman in red at a Han River bridge: one true tale after another unfolds across Jingchu. Starting from Jiangcheng, they travel through all nine of Hubei’s haunted regions, navigating resentment and murderous spirits. An ancestral jade pendant, secret folk rituals, and their loyalty to one another become their only means of resisting the ghosts. As the livestreams go on, long-buried tragedies come to light and resentment gathers across the region. The three are gradually drawn into a thousand-year-old destiny tied to Chu shamanism. This is more than a paranormal livestream for thrills: it is a deadly adventure in which ordinary people risk their lives to protect the peace of Jingchu.
