When Restraint Meets Purity

She is Xue Shanshan, the most unremarkable junior employee in the finance department of Fengteng Group. Her biggest worry is that the cafeteria’s braised pork is in limited supply, and her best quality is that she never holds a grudge, because her memory really is terrible.

He is Meng Yancheng, heir to Guokun Group, known to outsiders as the heartless “Lord Meng.” Everyone knows he is a neat freak, has strict rules, and draws lines no one may cross. No one knows that he harbors a love he can never have, a feeling that has eaten away at him for ten years, burning him to the core.

They come from two different worlds and should never have crossed paths.

Until one night, when Xue Shanshan got drunk, walked into the wrong private room, and spilled an entire glass of red wine on Meng Yancheng’s suit trousers.

She crouched on the floor, flustered as she tried to wipe them clean, murmuring, “I’m so sorry, I’m so sorry, Mr. Meng. Please be the bigger person.”

He lowered his head and saw a pair of astonishingly bright eyes.

Later, everyone said Meng Yancheng had fallen for Xue Shanshan.

Only Meng Yancheng knew the truth: she was the one who barged into his life first.

Like a ray of light entering a sealed room, like a breeze sweeping open dusty curtains.

His world was so cold he thought he had long since grown used to it. Then she burst in, bringing the warmth of everyday life: the aroma of braised pork, the streamers at the annual party, the flustered sound of high heels on carpet. Noisy, lively, full of warmth.

He became addicted to all that bustle.

Or rather, he became addicted to her.

This is a story about restraint and abandon, burdens and letting go.

It began with a spilled glass of red wine and ended with the words, “I do.”
