This story takes place during the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period (907–960), specifically around the transition from Later Liang to Later Tang, circa 920. The land is in chaos, warlords carve up the realm, and regimes rise and fall in rapid succession. “The emperor is whoever has the strongest army and the finest horses.”
Modern identity of the protagonist: Special forces commander, history enthusiast
Transmigrated identity: Chen Zhao, a junior officer on Later Liang’s frontier. His father died in battle, and his fellow officers ostracize him.
Personality: Calm and decisive, loyal to those he cares about, with principles but no blind rigidity
Core abilities: Modern tactical thinking, troop-training methods, and management skills
Character arc: From “I just want to survive” to “I must seize power to change this chaotic age”
In troubled times, the true chaos lies not in war, but in the hearts of men.
The emperor is whoever has the strongest army and the finest horses;
The common folk are helpless as meat on the chopping board.
A mere soldier, a farmer at dawn, ascending to the imperial court by dusk;
Yesterday’s honored guest, today’s prisoner in the dungeon.
In fifty years, eight surnames replaced one another on the throne, fourteen men proclaimed themselves emperor, and the number of new reign titles was beyond counting.
Benevolence, righteousness, propriety, and wisdom were cast away with broken halberds in the sand;
Loyalty, faith, integrity, and shame were swept off like fallen flowers on a stream.
And yet
Heaven and Earth are not benevolent; to them, all things are straw dogs.
Heroes seize their moment and make the realm their chessboard.
Chen Zhao, a soul who did not belong to this age, fell onto the most perilous square of this game on the darkest night of all.
A magnificent epic of troubled times This book takes the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms as the stage, and tells the legend of a modern soul who traveled through time and became a downtrodden general, starting from twelve remnant soldiers, and working hard step by step to become the world's leader. The author has a deep understanding of the historical texture, and skillfully integrates modern systems, military thinking and ancient elegant writing styles to create a founding hero who cares about the common people and respects the hearts of the people. The war scenes are grand and ingenious, the details of the country's governance are solid and not suspended, and the characters are vivid and full. The language of white and white has both classical charm and smoothness. It can be called an excellent work of Machiavellian writing that travels through history. It's a hearty read, and the aftertaste is even more lingering when I close the book.
