Synopsis

This novel sets out to investigate a murder: was Gao Cheng, father of the famed Prince of Lanling, Gao Changgong, killed by his own brother Gao Yang? Two of the best-known figures from the Wei, Jin, and Northern and Southern Dynasties are Hua Mulan and the Prince of Lanling. The contemporary musician Liu Qingyao's piece "Prince of Lanling Breaks the Enemy Lines" inspired this story. Gao Changgong was the grandson of Gao Huan, the protagonist of "The Chile Song." After the song is sung, a succession of events unfolds: "Dog-Footed Emperor," the Hou Jing Rebellion, "Better to be a broken piece of jade than an intact tile," "Thirty years east of the river, thirty years west of the river," and "Jade bodies displayed in rows." Together with other stories and sayings, such as "cutting through the knots with a sharp knife," these form the backbone of the tales of Northern Qi's historical figures. This novel invents a plot in which the Prince of Lanling searches for his mother, since the historical records say his birth mother was unknown. It also invents a modern person who transmigrates into the Southern and Northern Dynasties: an academic whiz who won second prize in a municipal junior-high chemistry competition, and who, after graduating from university, must survive amid the wars while witnessing the technology of the era. The novel tries to bring stories of Northern Dynasties women from history books into its pages, with a deliberately concise writing style. Thanks to Bilibili creators Anzhou Mu and Bohai Xiaoli, whose explanations of Southern and Northern Dynasties history provided the source material for this novel.
