The Mystic Eye Crime Files

The night sky over New Chang’an is a dark red, steeped in neon and holographic billboards, like a piece of cured meat left out too long, its fat seeping out. On New Year’s Eve in the Bingwu year, the world should have been warm with life. Yet some corners are colder and quieter than a morgue freezer. Lu Li sits in one such corner, holding between his fingertips the copper coin he pried from the tightly clenched hand of a dead man. Rust mottles its surface. A twisted horse tramples a blurry swallow. He closes his eyes, not because he is tired, but because he cannot bear to look again. In that brief glance, he “saw” it: a mane of flames, hollow eyes burning, and an indescribable malice and chill as it charged straight at the camera, no, at the dead man, and at him. This is no murder weapon. It is a warning. The next Bingwu cycle has begun. His bloodstained finger idly brushes the cold label on the evidence bag: Excavation site: Jiazi District ancient tomb complex, Bingwu Tomb. Blood seeps into the verdigris. Deep in an abyss no one can hear, certain things that have lain sleeping, perfectly still, for ages gently open their eyes.
