Isaac Vidal first met Lin Yan in a hotel suite in Monte Carlo.

The blond, green-eyed arms dealer had just come up from the pool, his bathrobe hanging loose. His gaze swept from Lin Yan’s head to his feet. “Grace sent such a pretty secretary to negotiate a deal. Is he an extra perk?”

Lin Yan wore a neat black suit, his shirt buttoned to the very top. He smiled professionally. “Mr. Vidal, this is your itinerary for tomorrow.”

Isaac didn’t take it.

He moved closer, breathing against Lin Yan’s ear as he made a lewd remark.

Lin Yan’s smile stiffened for 0.3 seconds.

Then he took out his phone and asked calmly, “Would you like me to contact the hotel’s guest services?”

Isaac looked at him, then suddenly laughed.

“No,” he said. “I want you.”

Later, Lin Yan wondered what might have happened if he hadn’t knocked on that door that night, if his boss hadn’t backed him into a corner, if he hadn’t had to make that madman sign the damn contract.

But he had already knocked.

Later still, Lin Yan thought he was finally free.

Until a police officer showed up at his door and handed him a stack of photographs. “We need you to go back. Not to convict him, but to work as an informant.

The photos showed trafficked children, dead in horrific conditions.

Lin Yan stared at them for a long time.

“Why me?”

The officer paused before answering. “Because he risked his life to erase all your criminal records.”

Him. Isaac Vidal. That madman.
