Northeast Tales: Wang Pinghe

In 1990, a young dockworker walked up to a local thug with half a beer bottle in hand and demanded the thirty yuan he’d earned through hard labor. His disabled father lay in bed waiting for medicine. His uncle, an old hand in the underworld, saw his courage and gave him two brothers who would risk their lives for him. He went from being trampled on to finding his footing, not through tricks, but with hard fists and an even harder spine. When the old ghost of Xigang kidnapped his brother, he stormed a den of a hundred men alone, wielding two cleavers. There are only two kinds of people in this world: those who stand, and those who kneel. Wang Pinghe said, “We don’t live on our knees.”
