Reborn, Flowing Backward

At forty-eight, Jiang Yan died from the torment of pneumoconiosis. Twenty years of dust in the county’s textile mill had swallowed his lungs. His wife left him, his son died at a construction site before he did, and in the end all that remained was a half-collapsed old house and the sunset over the corn drying at the village entrance. He went through life utterly alone.

When he opened his eyes again, it was autumn 1993. Inside his nineteen-year-old body were the wreckage and hard-won clarity of two lifetimes. No golden finger, no shortcut to the heavens. Heaven had simply tossed him back to the starting point of his fate and forced him to live again.

He no longer fought for the house his uncle had taken, asking only for a drafty woodshed to shelter in. He stayed away from the deadly mines and life-draining factories, making a living by digging in an ignored stretch of riverbank. He repaired worn-out farm tools, planted slow-ripening fruit trees, saved the widow who had jumped into a well in his previous life, and gradually pieced together the shattered first half of his life.

There were doubts, miscalculations, and impossible dilemmas, but also redemption hidden in the soil and the warmth of everyday life. He wanted neither wealth nor fame, only a steady life, setting right one by one the things he had neglected, missed, and lost in his previous life.

From barren riverbanks and poor fields to apple trees laden with fruit, from lonely hardship to a home filled with warmth, Jiang Yan used half a lifetime to prove that going back in time is not about reversing fate to get rich. It is about facing life with the clarity of someone who has already died once, making bitter days sweet and turning an imperfect life into a whole one.
