Storms on Three Fronts

Nine attempts at the civil service exam, nine failures. Chen Jingchu, an auxiliary police officer, has dreamed of wearing that uniform for as long as he can remember.

Then the Deputy Minister of Public Security comes to see him in person. “There’s a mission with a one-in-ten chance of survival. You’ll go undercover as a wanted criminal in the most lawless special economic zone in Southeast Asia, the Sanbian Zone.”

Three days later, the wanted notice goes viral. The former auxiliary officer is now a hardened criminal with a 50,000-yuan bounty on his head.

Once inside the Sanbian Zone, he changes magazines one-handed while suppressing local militia, interrogates drug lords with a stun baton in a rapid-fire triple shock, and even has a Hongmen boss personally tattoo him with a crossing river dragon. The Ba family tries to recruit him, the Wei family hunts him down, and Chinese workers trapped in scam compounds see him as their savior.

“Primer” is his codename. He can set off ammunition, but he can also kindle hope.

In the darkness, he builds the “Chen Family Army” and lays down three ironclad rules: no drugs, no cheating fellow Chinese, and no killing the innocent. The four great families hate him to the bone, while the underworld reveres him as a god.

On the far side of the border, he is a wanted criminal. On this side, he is China’s deepest undercover asset.

When gunfire erupts along the Mekong and the lights of countless homes illuminate the border, someone asks who he is.

He says, “I’m not a good man, and I’m not a bad man. I’m just a night watchman, keeping watch until dawn, so every one of my countrymen can make it home safe.”
