The Heart’s Hard to Guard, Below the Bottom Line

Shen Lingyu has held fast to her emotional boundaries for five years, while staying true to her quiet, steady principles at work.

She believes love should be restrained and faithful, and she has always upheld her principle of not crossing the line before marriage. Her boyfriend, Chen Ze, has treated her with gentle patience for five years, and she is sure he is the man she will spend her life with. As a designer, she keeps her head down and hones her skills, hoping only to find stability in the office towers.

But an unexpected encounter during Saturday overtime cracks open the world of love she had so carefully built. Ambiguous sounds seep from the gap beneath a lounge door, a strange gardenia scent clings to her boyfriend, and his tenderness vanishes the moment he turns away. The crack may be small, but it cuts to the bone.

Meanwhile, rumors of a new company president sweep through the staff, and a wave of layoffs looms. A make-or-break design proposal is her only chance to keep her job. Anxious and desperate for inspiration, she ducks into a café, only to run into a strange man with a chilling presence. They clash fiercely. She has no idea that this man, who casually judges her and sees through her vulnerability, is the incoming president who will soon take charge of the entire company and decide whether she stays or goes.

On one side is a five-year romance riddled with doubts and hidden betrayal. On the other is a workplace crisis where the winds are shifting and every step is fraught with danger.

The emotional boundaries she has guarded are already stirred by undercurrents; the professional ground she stands on is about to be swept away in a ruthless shake-up.

Beyond those boundaries lie secrets that cannot be hidden, lies that cannot be exposed, and the trials of human nature and fate that she cannot escape. The everyday life that once seemed so stable is already teetering on the edge.
