Synopsis

In 1943, a reinforced platoon of 42 soldiers from the Chinese Expeditionary Force was ordered to hold the Thousand-Year Banyan Tree position deep in the Hukawng Valley, facing the frenzied assault of more than 1,200 soldiers from the Japanese 18th Division. For 58 days, cut off from food and medicine and with their ammunition exhausted, they carved blood-written messages with their bayonets and gave their lives to protect the battered battle flag, turning the banyan's roots into their final line of defense. This was more than a desperate stand in which they fought to the death. It was a tragic epic of the Chinese people's indomitable spirit. When the last soldier fell, every inch of the banyan's roots had been soaked in the blood and backbone of the Chinese people.
