Echoes of Mountains and Rivers

During the Western Zhou’s feudal era, a bronze seal engraved with the words “May the mountains and rivers endure forever” was cast deep in the Qinling Mountains. Legend has it that the seal holds the essence and memories of the lands of the Nine Provinces. From the imperial roads that crisscrossed the realm in the Qin dynasty, to the beacon fires that linked the horizon in the Han, the sails on the Grand Canal in the Sui and Tang, and the camel bells at mountain passes in the Song and Yuan, it traveled across mountains and rivers, witnessing walls rise and fall, and ancient roads stretch out before fading into obscurity.

Time passes to the Year of the Fire Horse. Chen Wang, a young archaeology scholar, stumbles upon fragments of the seal while surveying the ancient plank road in southern Shaanxi. The fragments set him on a trail, launching a quest across time. Following clues in ancient texts, he finds himself amid the sunset at Tongguan, the morning mist at Jiange, the starry skies above the Hexi Corridor, and the sound of oars along the Grand Canal. Every landscape and every city, stirred by the seal’s resonance, “tells” him stories once buried by time: letters home from frontier soldiers, merchants’ ledgers, poems by exiles, and the sweat and blood of artisans.

Chen Wang gradually discovers that the seal is more than a witness to history: it is also a “tuning instrument” for civilization. When all the fragments are reunited, the cultural legacy of the land comes “alive” in the present day. Ancient roads become high-speed rail lines, old city walls shelter new creative ventures, and signals from the Beidou navigation system rise above thousand-year-old beacon towers. History and the present intertwine before his eyes to form a magnificent new vision. Those reflections on mountains and rivers have never ceased, and beneath the light of history, a more vibrant era is flourishing anew along ancient roots.
