The Beggar's Coffin

During the great drought of the Guangxu era, the beggar A Tu sold himself to the Zhou household to protect an infant. While keeping watch over a coffin at night, he was attacked by a pack of wolves. He risked his life to protect the corpse, only to become a suspect. The empty coffin, the blood covering him, and the shroud were all taken as proof. Accused of eating the corpse, with no way to clear his name, he swallowed charcoal to prove his innocence. Years later, the abandoned child grew up to become a renowned forensic examiner. By reasoning from bite marks, he solved a wrongful death case from the chaotic era and restored a lifetime of dignity to the righteous beggar.
