Hunting in the Greater Khingan Range in 1985: After Calling Off My Engagement, I Got Rich in the Mountains

On the twenty-eighth day of the twelfth lunar month in 1985, Zhou Sanshun was reborn at his wedding, where he was marrying into his bride’s family. In his previous life, he was spineless to the bitter end. His parents forced him to marry the production team leader’s daughter, who was already pregnant by another man. He raised the families of his two brothers-in-law, only to freeze to death at sixty in the Mountain God Temple. Only as he lay dying did he learn that Bai Tingting, his childhood sweetheart who had always secretly slipped him biscuits, had been sold off for a bride price and died in childbirth. This time, he would draw his hunting knife and live life differently! At the wedding, he exposes his unfaithful bride’s pregnancy and calls off the marriage in front of everyone. He cuts ties with his biased parents: “From now on, I won’t support you in life or bury you in death!” Live in the Mountain God Temple and chew on frozen biscuits? No problem! He has a hereditary talent for hunting. From trapping wild rabbits to hunting sable on snowy nights, then taking down a 300-jin wild boar with his rifle. A sable pelt sells for six hundred yuan, and a bear gall sells for a thousand. He’ll show everyone who looked down on him what it means to “hunt your way to a mountain of gold”! Revenge begins now. The Liu family strikes back? He turns around and reports their embezzlement of eight hundred yuan, costing his former father-in-law his position. The Ma family tries to crush him? He finds a chance to uproot them completely. As for his brother-in-law, who keeps trying to harm him, he smiles and lures the man into a wolf’s den: “There are wolves in the mountains. Watch out, or they’ll tear your heart out.” But most important of all is the girl who always sneaks off to wipe away her tears by the stove. He brings her squirrels and rabbits, and medicine bought with the money he gets from selling sable pelts. Bai Tingting, her eyes red, pushes him away. “Brother Sanshun, my family will only be a burden to you…” Zhou Sanshun grabs her frostbitten hand. “Tingting, in my previous life I owed you my life. This time, I’ll protect you and keep you safe for the rest of yours.” See how a reborn hunter, in the vast Hinggan Mountains, uses his hunting knife to take revenge on snowy nights, and his tender heart to protect the one he loves, forges his own tale of an underdog’s rise in 1985!
