The Midwife

Lin Xiuzhu, a midwife in a northern mountain village in the 1960s, welcomed countless lives with her own hands and witnessed firsthand how rural attitudes toward childbirth changed. Her skill and compassion were passed on to her daughter, Chen Xiaomei, through her birth records and an old wooden chest. In the new era, Chen Xiaomei founded a charity, turning her mother's wisdom into a public good that benefits everyone.

Her granddaughter, Li Wan, became a bridge between tradition and modernity. She used her medical knowledge to decipher ancient case notes, adapted her grandmother's folk remedies during epidemics and disasters, and stood up for the irreplaceable value of a human touch when confronted with artificial intelligence. Her efforts brought family memories into technological algorithms and even inspired ideas for childbirth in space.

Time passed, and in the twenty-second century, her great-granddaughter inscribed this sense of touch, spanning time and space, into neural chips and interstellar protocols. From a village birthing room to distant planets, the midwife's skills had become an eternal starlight protecting the arrival of new life, telling the truth that every civilization begins with a tender welcome.
