Lin Yi, a modern university student, has his soul transported to the end of the Ming dynasty, where he becomes the leader of bandits in Laoshan. Taking the place of Li Huaiyi, the Jimo County Magistrate, who was ambushed, he sets out with the conviction that "the people should have enough to eat, and there should be fairness." Amid the chaos of war, he outwits corrupt officials, suppresses bandits and brings peace to the people, and fights the Tartars and Japanese pirates. Gradually winning hearts and building his power, he ultimately rises to become the ruler of all under heaven. Along the way, unsolved mysteries and romances in a turbulent age intertwine, weaving a legend of rising to power at the end of the Ming dynasty.
