[Alternate-history period romance + Childhood sweethearts + Slow burn + Kindred souls + Mutual pining + A journey toward the light] Ten years ago, Xu Nianxue was a gloomy, quiet girl who always wore black and gray. She went back and forth between the home enclosed by the courtyards of Liuhe and the academy, walking alone through dark alleyways. He was Liu Chengren, a sunny, lively boy in a long red robe. Among the countless classmates outside the study, he noticed her, huddled miserably beneath the rain with a cloth bag in her hands. He held up a blue oil-paper umbrella and strolled toward her. “Why do I always see you walking alone?” She turned to look at him, as if seeing a ray of warm light shine into her darkness. “I… I’m used to it.” Over the next ten years, Xu Nianxue and Liu Chengren became each other’s refuge in this world. Whatever changed around them, neither wanted to lose sight of the other. Ten years later, she is a resilient young woman determined to wait for love, a storyteller who writes about everything in the world. Everything that happened over those ten years became material for her stories, helping her earn more and more money. He is a gentle young man who avoids confrontation, an architectural painter who depicts every building in the world. When he was young, he thought that as long as they stayed together, they could solve any problem. But as they grew up, she became better and better, while he could barely keep himself afloat. He no longer had the strength to protect her peace, and he didn’t even dare reply to her letters. Yet she stayed resolutely where their fate had begun, waiting and waiting. People often asked her, “Xu Nianxue, is this foolish painter really worth it?” She would say, “I weigh everything in the world, but when it comes to him, I never ask whether he’s worth it. I only say that I want to.”
