A Healer’s Heart in the Southern Exodus

Heart of a Healer Crossing South

Synopsis

In the second year of Jianyan, the Central Plains falls. Jin troops trample the land, forcing a million refugees to flee south. Lin Yan, a 28-year-old modern emergency room doctor, suffers a sudden heart attack after an overnight shift and dies, only to transmigrate into the body of a destitute apprentice at an apothecary in Northern Song Bianjing. In this age of chaos, armed with modern first-aid knowledge and a fastidiousness ingrained to the bone, he uses his own hands to clean wounds and set bones among the refugees, stopping the spread of disease. At the edge of life and death, he saves Shen Qingci, the estranged son of a civil official.

They journey south through hardship and uncertainty. With a healer’s compassion, Lin Yan joins forces with Old Zhou, a retired military medic skilled in herbal medicine. Using “strange” methods such as boiling instruments to sterilize them and isolating the sick, they repeatedly overcome crises caused by food shortages, marauding deserters, and epidemics, protecting the refugees around them. Gentle yet resilient, Shen Qingci takes care of daily affairs and helps people read and write, becoming Lin Yan’s strongest emotional support in these troubled times. They save each other in turn, and a quiet understanding grows between them.

After reaching Changzhou in Jiangnan, the three settle in Shen Qingci’s dilapidated ancestral home and set up a small clinic. Lin Yan improves wound ointments and introduces simple methods of disease prevention, treating countless refugees and wounded soldiers. His reputation grows, but he continues to avoid the political arena, holding fast to his principle: “I only save lives and heal the injured. I won’t get involved in power struggles.” Whether facing harassment from local gentry, attempts by Qin Hui’s faction to recruit him, or an invitation to join the Yue Family Army, he uses his wits to resolve each situation and stays true to his clinic and the people close to him.
