Midnight Photo Studio

Synopsis of Midnight Photo Studio

In the rain-soaked city of Qiye, truck driver Zhao Dagen wanders into a photo studio that only opens at midnight after making a delivery one night. The owner hands him a cup of hot tea with a red candle wick floating in it, but the photo they take shows him dying in a car accident the next day. To unravel the death omen, Zhao Dagen recruits his cousin Wu Dabog, a newspaper reporter who believes firmly in science. They discover that the photo studio is listed in local chronicles as “burned down in 1949,” while the face of the qipao-clad woman in the yellowed display photos is always hidden in shadow.

As the investigation deepens, they come across photographs of “unborn babies” in the archive of negatives. Wu Dabog briefly transmigrates to 1948, where he witnesses the qipao-clad woman being sacrificed alive to become a “Time Watcher.” Old Zhou, an editor of the local chronicles, secretly tries to stop them, warning that “the return of the dead will bring disaster.” When Zhao Dagen uses an antique mirror left behind by his aunt to reflect the red candlelight, the qipao-clad woman howls and reveals the truth: Zhao Dagen's ancestors once sacrificed living people with red candles to maintain the balance between yin and yang. The death omen in the photo is actually a “time debt,” and if Zhao Dagen evades death, Wu Dabog will take his place.

In the end, Zhao Dagen drives straight toward the scene of the foretold accident, fooling the rules of time. The photo studio disappears, but Wu Dabog receives a new photograph: young Zhao Dagen standing behind him, suggesting the cycle hasn't been broken. As the red candle goes out, A Cui's whisper drifts away on the wind: “At the next stroke of midnight, the clock will ring again...”
