The Demon Management Bureau's Human Affairs Office

Have you ever wondered why strange noises always come from next door in the middle of the night? Why the antique shop downstairs never opens, yet never disappears? All the answers lie beyond the elevator at 44 Happiness Street, which is forever stuck on the 24th floor. Welcome to the Human Affairs Office of the Bureau of Demon Management, a grassroots agency dedicated to managing “nonhuman residents.” Here, your coworker might be a fox spirit, a visitor might be a locust tree spirit, and your first assignment might be helping an unemployed koi spirit write a resume.

The Human Affairs Office of the Bureau of Demon Management is a contemporary urban fantasy set in a modern society where humans and demons coexist. The Bureau of Demon Management is the legally mandated governing body, and its Human Affairs Office handles grassroots matters. Told from the perspective of Lin Xiaoyu, a newly hired human clerk, the story vividly depicts a fantastical world hidden beneath the ordinary as she handles demons’ household registration, employment, social lives, and legal disputes. Along the way, it gradually uncovers heartwarming stories that cross species lines, the truth behind urban legends, and the protagonist’s astonishing secret.
